Raw material volatility: what manufacturers should watch this year

Raw-material prices swing on currency, freight and policy. Here's how procurement teams are building buffers into industrial sourcing.

For manufacturers that depend on a steady flow of raw materials, volatility is the defining challenge of the year. The price a procurement team pays for metals, minerals or other production inputs is shaped less by the material itself than by three forces moving underneath it: currency, freight and policy. Understanding how those forces interact is the difference between reacting to volatility and building buffers against it.

The three drivers of raw-material volatility

Currency. Most industrial raw materials are priced or ultimately settled with reference to hard currency, while manufacturers earn revenue locally. When local currencies move, input costs move with them — often faster than a producer can pass the change through to customers. For African manufacturers in particular, currency exposure is frequently the single largest swing factor in the landed cost of an imported input.

Freight. The cost and reliability of moving physical goods is a volatility source in its own right. Freight rates rise and fall with fuel, capacity and route disruption, and delays convert directly into production risk. A material that is cheap at origin but unreliable in transit is not cheap.

Policy. Tariffs, import rules, export restrictions and documentation requirements can change the economics of a material overnight. Policy risk is hard to hedge financially, which is why it tends to be managed through sourcing structure instead.

Why the landed cost matters more than the headline price

A common procurement mistake is anchoring on the quoted price of a material and treating everything else as noise. In practice, currency, freight and policy often move the true landed cost more than the underlying commodity price does. Teams that watch only the headline number are consistently surprised by the final invoice.

The teams that manage volatility well track the full delivered cost and the reliability of delivery together — because a slightly higher price on a dependable transaction usually beats a lower price on one that fails.

Building buffers into sourcing

Procurement teams are responding by building structure, not just chasing price. That means several things in practice:

Diversifying supply so a single supplier or single corridor cannot halt production. Confirming specification and quantity before value changes hands, so a volatile market does not also become an unreliable one. And connecting sourcing to logistics and settlement so that the moving parts of a transaction are coordinated rather than managed as separate, fragile handoffs.

This is the practical case for trading through infrastructure. When raw-material sourcing is verified and coordinated end to end, volatility becomes something a manufacturer can plan around rather than absorb by surprise.

What to watch this year

The signals worth monitoring are the ones upstream of price: currency trend and volatility in your buying market, freight capacity and rate movement on the corridors you depend on, and any policy signals around import rules for your material category. A procurement team that watches those three, and builds sourcing structure around them, is far better positioned than one watching the commodity price alone.

Volatility is not going away. But it is manageable — for the teams that treat sourcing as infrastructure rather than a series of one-off purchases.
